Guidelines for Authors

Instructions

Please consult The Chicago Manual of Style, 15th Edition, for general issues of style and formatting. Our own style sheet provides more specific guidelines.

Contributors are strongly urged to avoid excessive use of endnotes and to use internal citations wherever possible.

Articles that fare well in peer review but that contain excessive notes will be given a conditional acceptance until the notes are reduced to a moderate number. Articles published in Symposium average 12–18 journal pages in length; however we have no rule regarding this. Longer essays are welcome, provided they remain within reasonable limits. Please submit either an e-mail attachment or two hard copies.

A note on peer review

All articles submitted to Symposium are peer-reviewed. Upon receipt of a manuscript an initial determination is made by the editor about the likelihood of a submission securing two favorable referee reports from scholars in the field. Some submissions are rejected at this stage. Otherwise the submission is forwarded to two referees from the editorial board for assessment on a double-blind basis. Manuscripts accepted for publication generally receive two favorable reports and final approval from the editor. Approximately 30% of articles accepted for publication require significant revision. Unsigned comments from referees are forwarded to authors when useful for purposes of revision. Average evaluation time is two months. Acceptance rate is between 8-10%.
